Psychodynamic therapy treats anger as meaningful communication from the patient's internal world rather than a behavior to be corrected. Every episode of disproportionate rage carries information about the patient's history, their unmet needs, and the emotions they have not been able to process through any other channel. The therapist and patient work together to decode that information over time. As the underlying emotions become accessible and the patient develops the capacity to experience them without converting them into anger, the chronic rage tends to diminish because its protective function has been fulfilled through a different pathway.
Dr. David Steinbok provides psychodynamic psychotherapy from his Boca Raton, Florida office. His practice is private-pay with monthly documentation for out-of-network insurance reimbursement.
