The therapeutic process for abandonment fear is not short-term. The fear developed over years of relational experience, and it does not recede through a brief intervention. What therapy provides is a relationship in which the abandonment fear can surface, be examined, and be understood without the consequences that make it so difficult to address in outside relationships. The therapist does not leave. The therapist does not retaliate. The therapist does not use the patient's vulnerability against him. Over time, that experience of relational safety becomes something the patient can reference internally when the fear activates in other contexts.
