Psychodynamic therapy addresses overthinking by treating the thoughts as symptoms rather than causes. The therapist is less interested in the content of the thoughts, what specifically the patient is worrying about, than in the emotional function the worrying performs. Two patients may ruminate about entirely different subjects, one about work and the other about relationships, but the underlying dynamic may be identical: both are using mental activity to avoid sitting with an emotion they find intolerable. Identifying that emotion and gradually building the patient's capacity to experience it is what allows the mental loop to release.
